During my early years of learning Blender I was asked to work on a video game concept and project known as Mall Launcher; later changed to Deal Breaker. The main programmer and project owner needed a 3D model specialist. At the time I was just beginning to learn the program and truly understand just how big a task building game ready asset truly is. I needed to work fast on making large amount of assets, textures, rigs, and materials. Through the process of building out this game I had crafted and built around 200+ assets to be used in the scenes.
This meant researching thousands of different malls and stores to build out a comprehensive understanding of the different type of objects I would need to model. I worked through the builds very methodically and efficiently. Some areas were easier then other like the food court, as the majority of the objects were simple systems and required little modifications to base meshes. But others were much more complex like the Mannequins which required me to build upon what I knew of modeling and dive into the realm of sculpting.
What this game helped me understand and develop a love for was producing and making many different types of materials, shaders, and textures. Although I wouldn't dive into the world of coding yet for this project, I would learn some basic understandings of how materials worked in the Blender environment. I soon developed a process of building out a materials, applying it appropriately to objects, and rendering them out for the best possible look fairly quickly. I learned how to use Blenders shader editor effectively and helped build the foundations for what I know now. Lastly, I learned how to use Photoshop for the first time to build out textures and masks for different custom materials I would need for more complex models.
By being apart of this project I had learned and developed my skills using Blender, both with modeling and sculpting.
I became familiar with how materials works and how the GPU would render different shaders depending on what I would do for each object.
This being my first project, I developed the confidence to go on to pursue different creative works in my life and build out more complex and interesting systems of my own.
